Photograph of Jan Masaryk
The Czech dedication to Richard Morawetz on this photograph is translated as:
In grateful recollection of Drevíc, sausages, 'Naše Doba' and the bicycle.
The
significance of each of these references is as follows:
Drevíc: On Richard Morawetz' return from his apprenticeship in England
in 1903, he met the Masaryk family who were looking for a quiet place away from
the public eye to spend their summer holidays. Richard arranged for them to
spend the summer in a house in Drevíc, near Hronov, where Richard was managing
one of his father's factories. Practically every evening that summer,
Richard rode his bicycle from Hronov to Drevíc and spent many hours in
discussion with the Masaryks. Richard was influenced by Thomas Masaryk's
adherence to truth and his thoroughness, and an interest in public life was
kindled during these summer evenings. Richard remembers Jan Masaryk as a boy of
sixteen with a wonderful, dry sense of humour.
sausages: Richard explains this reference in Talks With My Father,
his recollections as told to his daughter Sonja:
One day that summer we all went on a hike - the Masaryks, some American visitors of theirs and myself. On the way we dropped in at a country inn for a bite to eat. The choice was cheese or sausages and coffee, so we all had sausages and I paid the bill. Many years later, when President Masaryk held a reception at the castle in Prague, I took your mother
up to Jan to introduce her to him. He told her about the sausage feast and
added: "I still remember thinking at the time how, just for one day, I'd like to
be such a rich manufacturer and be able to pay for everybody's sausages."
Naše Doba: This was the name of the magazine of which Jan's father,
Thomas Masaryk, was the editor, and to which Richard Morawetz contributed
regular articles.
the bicycle: This refers to the bicycle on which Richard rode every
evening to Drevíc to visit the Masaryks. Once Jan borrowed the bicycle, and
managed to wreck it beyond hope of repair.
