Increasing popularity of Morawetz in concert, on record and on
radio
Oskar Morawetz' works are slated for many performances this season. Overture to A Fairy Tale has been programmed for eight performances by four orchestras: the Vancouver Symphony with Simon Streatfield, the Toronto Symphony with Mario Bernardi, the Edmonton Symphony with Pierre Hetu and the Canada Symphony with Uri Mayer.
Tenor Jon Vickers included in his latest record two songs by Morawetz: Elegy and Piping Down the Valleys Wild. The songs were heard for the first time in public on the CBC in January.
The CBC has commissioned Morawetz to write a work for flute and piano which will be premiered at the CBC Festival with Robert Aitken as soloist.
The Sinfonietta for Winds and Percussion was performed twice in February by the orchestra of the University of Indiana's school of music; one performance was held at the Bloomington Arts Centre in Indiana. In Montreal, the composer's String Quartet No.2 was performed in February and again in Hamilton by the Czech Quartet.
The Divertimento for Strings was performed by the New Chamber Orchestra for Canada in Toronto late in February at Hart House, and the Carnival Overture by the Hamilton Philharmonic under Boris Brott late in January.
