New Work Shows Warmth

TORONTO composer Oskar Morawetz found himself sandwiches between Beethoven, Ravel and Rimsky-Korsakov at last night's Toronto Symphony Orchestra concert in Massey Hall.

Dr. Morawetz came up smiling.

It was the world premiere of the 42-year-old composer's Second Symphony, and it stood up very well against the masters. Even the presence of guest soprano Victoria De los Angeles failed to fully detract from the symphony.

OPENING WARMTH

There is a warmth in the opening that prevails throughout, and conductor Walter Susskind was quick to catch it. There is also a freshness of approach in the frequent melodic beauty and Morawetz has underscored it with a good sense of the dramatic.

He has also provided an exciting finale which brings the work to a vibrant conclusion. He was called upon to acknowledge the enthusiastic applause.
