May 1968 The Instrumentalist
Sinfonietta for Winds and Percussion
This gem of writing for symphonic wind ensemble comes from the capable hand of
the Czech-born Canadian composer. It is composed for the single player
performers in the wind section of the symphony orchestra; or band minus
saxophones, baritones, and duplicate players on the parts. In idiom and
understanding it is more "late Romantic" than "contemporary", but its economy of
resources, sensitivity of color combinations, and skillful development make it
worthy of performance by the very mature organizations, both band and orchestra.
Although a large number of percussion instruments are called for, the use of
them is sparing and selective. This is a marvelous example of the maturity to
which wind instruments, and the composers who dedicate their best efforts to
them, have arrived. The study score is excellent and the large score and parts
are available on rental from the publisher. Duration 20 minutes. Study score
$5.00.
