A Canadian Recital

Canadian artists who are winning increased recognition for themselves in Canada and abroad will combine their talents on March 14th to provide a program of unusual interest on Sunday Morning Recital (10.30a.m. -Trans-Canada). Soprano Lois Marshall, accompanied at the piano by her teacher, Weldon Kilburn, will be heard in songs by Canadian composers Oskar Morawetz and Welford Russell.

Three songs in the second group, by Oskar Morawetz, are also settings for English poems, in this case by William Blake. The fourth song, I am so tired, with lyrics by Toronto poet Ann Wilkinson, is one of Morawetz's favorites, chiefly because of its rather ironical history. When it was first presented, a Toronto critic spent a very long paragraph tearing it apart. Undaunted, the composer included it in a number of songs he sent to the famous American Negro soprano Dorothy Maynor, who was about to set out on an extended tour. I am so tired was the song she chose, and she sang it wherever she went.
