A work by the late Canadian composer Oskar Morawetz, Divertimento for String
Orchestra, opened the concert. The Czech-born Morawetz, who died last year at
the age of 89 [sic], was well-known for his traditional-sounding compositions that
harkened back to earlier eras.
The tuneful Divertimento shares some of the pastoral elements of the great
20th century string works of British composers such as Benjamin Britten and
Gustav Holst.
