The second half of the concert began with the one Canadian item of the
evening, Oskar Morawetz’s Serenade for Strings. It’s a light piece in
some ways, but by no means trivial. Conductor Vernon led a convincing
performance and the musicians handled the fairly difficult score with aplomb.
Interestingly, as a young man Morawetz was acquainted with Martinu and Janacek.
