Mix of high energy, diabolic humor on the menu

Toronto composer Oskar Morawetz, 78, wrote his Concerto for Bassoon and Chamber
Orchestra at the request of David McGill, who at 25 is principal bassoonist with
the Cleveland Orchestra and one of the world's premier players.
INSPIRED: "I'm inspired if I know the artist who's playing it," said
Morawetz. "David is young and one of the very best."
Morawetz said his concerto has three movements - the first built on "diabolic"
humor, the second on a slow movement that explores the bassoon's higher
registers and the last on a happy bright sound.
"The bassoon is so often used as a clown instrument," he said. "This piece
treats it more seriously, gives it more color."
